The First Day

Posted on January 20, 2023January 20, 2023
They said there was no other way,
but all of their ways made me ill,
and as they drained my light away,
they offered me another pill.

And when my body couldn't heal
they said it must be in my mind.
So they wanted me not to feel,
but I continued to decline.

Finally, it came to the best,
who told me my options were spent.
He was giving up, he confessed,
but with him, I could not assent.

Which made it easy somehow,
to face the pain and go to war.
And when I did, I must avow,
I gained more than I was before.

The truth, I learned, lies in your past,
with this message waiting to burst:
today may feel like it's your last,
but it could also be your first.
