In heart, we didn’t know,
but she knew.
With a sun like that, how
could we know?
Nothing ever happened
to give us
that creeping in our bones.
That cold show.
But she knew to shed all
and prepare.
That the body’s rhythm
isn’t cast
aside by a warm surprise,
and that for
every exuberance,
a right,
and the hard sleep that is
required.
