What did you think would happen?
You take one pill to fix that,
one to fix another,
and before you know it,
you don’t know one problem
from the other.
Unraveling all of that
doesn’t happen
at the flick of a switch.
You can’t trick the brain for so long
and actually believe
it’s not gonna bitch.
Did you? Do you still?
I know it hurts
and you don’t want to feel.
But it’s supposed to.
It’s supposed to, because like it or not,
you are real.
You are the grand summation
of a million thoughts and hopes,
one long continuing dream,
lying there,
waiting to reveal
the space where feelings teem.
If you never turn towards them,
nor find the courage to say,
“I feel you,”
then you will most certainly miss
that which you are
meant to do.
Because the hurts, the worries,
the fears and the doubts,
are a privilege to face.
A rare chance to share
your unique beauty
with this place.
To be brave beyond
the limits of the body.
To look in but not fall.
So that you can be a voice
that knows the pains—knows the joys—
and be able to tell it all.

This poem came to me in a rush—an echo from old thoughts about health struggles and what it takes to become the person you’re meant to be if you’re going to have any shot at this thing we call life. If you liked this, I hope you’ll check out more over at In Verse.
