Chuck’s Bat

Funny I hadn't thought of you lately,
for it hasn't been long and I've lost so few.
I guess that's what happens when new losses,
like dominoes,
knock down the thieving moments of our pasts
and leave our memories with the aptitude to serve
only one reflection at a time.

But then you were there,
playing whiffle ball with us in the park.
I turned your inscription once in my hands,
remembering how quickly the flow of nature makes us forget.
We knew little of each other then,
but little is needed to slap joy on the foundation of another's life,
and memory has served me few better ways of saying hello
than to swing a smiling bat.
